News and PressINTERNATIONAL TELCOM ENTERS LOCAL EXCHANGE MARKETSEATTLE, Wash. - September 24, 1998 - International Telcom Ltd. is now providing business and residential customers an alternative to the standard local telephone service with its newest service, ITLmetro, a competitive local exchange carrier, or CLEC, in Washington, Oregon, California, New York and Florida. ITLmetro is operating as a CLEC as a direct result of the Telecommunications Act of 1996, which opened up local telephone service to competition. Prior to the 1996 Act, only one incumbent local exchange carrier, such as US West, GTE or Pacific Bell, could provide an area with local telephone service. The breakup of the local market is similar to the demise of Ma Bell in 1984, which saw companies like MCI, Sprint and others become major players in the long-distance market. "Instead of offering cookie-cutter service plans, we strive to work closely with customers to satisfy their local telephone service needs and requirements," said Jonathan Larson, Business Manager of Local Exchange Services. ITLmetro is a facilities-based CLEC that owns 100 percent of its digital switches.
International Telcom, the parent company of ITLmetro, is known for providing
economically priced, reliable communications, coupled with attentive customer
service. The company is best known for introducing Kallback, the leading dialback
service, and Faxaway, the original Internet-based fax service. International
Telcom provides telecommunications services to more than 700,000 customers in 225
countries.
